Footy 9s arrives in the USA

12 October 2022

Australian Football International (AFI) is delighted to announce the launch of Footy 9s in the USA.

We are pleased to welcome Colorado Footy 9s as our first official affiliate in the US.

Colorado Footy 9s is managed by the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District. The aim is to grow the sport for women, men and youth in the Denver metro area.

Footy 9s is an exciting variation of Aussie Rules Football that presents dynamic new opportunities to grow the game in the States.

Footy 9s can be played on any football field and uses existing goalposts and field markings. As a result, all you need is a football to play a match. Please watch the video below to see how the game is played.

Footy 9s has been designed to make it much easier for Americans to enjoy playing a new game, without the difficulty of trying to find a large enough field and recruit a small army in order to play.

Colorado Footy 9s President, Sara Rohner:
“Footy is a sport that, once it’s in your blood, you can’t get it out. My main objective is to grow the game and make it accessible as possible, with regular competition amongst adults and children. AFI has the resources and equivalent desire to assist the international growth of the sport outside of Australia, especially in the US.”

AFI CEO Brian Clarke:
“We are delighted to be working with Colorado Footy 9s as our first affiliate in the US. The potential of Footy 9s is enormous and we are keen to bring the concept to cities right across the States.”
