Australian Football International (AFI) is pleased to announce the formation of AFI Europe, which has been established to grow and develop Footy 9s in Europe.

Played on rectangular fields, Footy 9s is an exciting new sport that offers 3 great formats to choose from:

  • Men’s Footy
  • Women’s Footy
  • Touch Footy

Our outcomes in each country include:

Participation – introducing the sport to encourage participation at the grassroots level, including men’s and women’s competitions.

Community – empowering people and communities. Participation in sport enhances community well-being and brings people together.

Health – our objective is not only to play footy and have fun, but also to enhance both the physical and mental well-being of all participants.

Employment – creating opportunities to fund full-time Development Managers to grow and develop the game in Europe.

National Teams – giving the best players in each country the opportunity to compete against other countries in Europe, including the annual Europe 9s.

AFI Europe Chairman, Brian Currane:
“We are delighted to be working alongside AFI to promote and grow this exciting new format across Europe. And excited to get behind and support the work underway to have Footy 9s included as a demonstration sport in the 2032 Olympics, and to make it an accessible and positive experience for all. As someone who has been involved in international footy for over 20 years, I am very much looking forward to what lies ahead for Footy 9s in Europe.”

AFI CEO Brian Clarke:
“We are looking forward to working with AFI Europe to grow Footy 9s throughout the region. The potential is enormous – we have already established a presence in the UK and Spain with the formation of both the Footy 9s South Coast UK league and AFI Catalonia. It’s going to be an exciting journey as we build towards the inaugural Europe 9s in Amsterdam in 2025.”
