What are the dates?
The proposed dates of the 2028 Australian Football World Cup are 11-26 August. The exact dates will be confirmed once feedback is received from teams and stakeholders.
Where will the matches be played?
It is proposed that all matches will be played at the Albert Park sports precinct in Melbourne, Australia.

Where will the 18-a-side Grand Finals be played?
In previous International Cups, the men’s Grand Final was held as a curtain-raiser to an AFL match at the MCG. This is obviously a huge selling point for teams attending the World Cup, so we will request the assistance of the AFL to make this happen.
We will also request the assistance of the AFL to ensure the World Cup women’s Grand Final is played as a curtain-raiser to an AFLW match.
What are the formats?
The World Cup will feature the following 3 formats of Australian Football: 18-a-side, Footy 9s and Touch Footy 9s.
How do we enter a team?
To register your interest in entering a team, please complete the Online Expression of Interest Form.
Can we enter a team in more than one format?
Yes. You can enter a team in one, two or all three formats.
What are the responsibilities of competing teams?
Competing teams will be responsible for their own costs in relation to Airfares, Visas, Meals and Accommodation.
Will the AFL be involved?
We are keen to work with the AFL to stage the inaugural World Cup. We will ask the AFL to assist with the following:
- Tickets provided to World Cup teams to attend AFL Matches
- Men’s 18-a-side Grand Final being played as a curtain-raiser to an AFL match
- Women’s 18-a-side Grand Final being played as a curtain-raiser to an AFLW match
- Promotion of the World Cup on the AFL website
- Promotion of the World Cup on AFL social media
