AUSTRALIA & FRANCE
The history of the French in Australia dates from the arrival of the La Perouse expedition at Botany Bay in January 1788, just days after the landing of the First Fleet.

Australia’s relations with France are underpinned by strong and enduring historical links. There has been consular and diplomatic engagement since 1842, and cooperation in both the First World War and the Second World War.

According to the 2016 Census, there were 135,382 people of French descent in Australia and 31,120 French-born people residing in Australia.

COUNTRY PROFILE
The Republic of France includes four overseas departments in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion and French Guiana.

Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. It is often referred to as L’Hexagone (“The Hexagon”) because of the geometric shape of its territory.

France is bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Monaco; with Spain and Andorra to the south. France is linked to the UK by the Channel Tunnel, which passes underneath the English Channel.

A key player on the world stage and a country at the political heart of Europe, France was one of the founding fathers of European integration as the continent sought to rebuild after the devastation of World War II.
