AFI has extensive experience working with the Albanian community in Australia.

We are now looking forward to bringing Footy 9s to Albania!

Footy 9s is played on rectangular fields, allowing the sport to be played on any soccer or rugby field.

There are 3 great formats to choose from – Men’s Footy, Women’s Footy and Touch Footy.

AUSTRALIA & ALBANIA
The first recorded Albanian to settle in Australia was Naum Konxha who arrived in Brisbane in 1885 and decided to stay permanently. However, the first significant Albanian migration to Australia started in the 1920s after the USA placed migration quota restrictions for Southern Europeans.

Many Albanians who arrived in the 1920s settled in rural areas and engaged in agriculture related employment – mainly fruit growing.

The 2016 Census recorded 15,901 people of Albanian ancestry living in Australia and 4,041 people born in Albania who now live in Australia. Regions with significant populations include Melbourne, Shepparton, Mareeba, Sydney and Adelaide.

Team Albania

Having been one of the original organisers of Team Albania, I have to say it was with a great feeling of pride, running out in the jumper. The concept of bringing different nations together by Brian Clarke, and his passion for the game, is unparalleled. I can speak on behalf of the Albanian community in saying that it was a fantastic achievement for us to represent our country! I would encourage any community to get on board and support the cause to bring our great game to the world.

COUNTRY PROFILE
The Republic of Albania is a small, mountainous country on south-eastern Europe’s Balkan Peninsula, bordering the Adriatic Sea to the west. It has land borders with Greece to the south and Serbia and Montenegro to the east.

Albania occupies an important strategic location in the Balkans along the Strait of Otranto which links the Adriatic Sea to the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

The name Albania is derived from an ancient Illyrian tribe, the Albanoi, forebears of the modern Albanians. The Albanian name for the country is Shqiperise or ‘Land of the Eagle’. The capital of Albania is Tirana.
