SOUTH AFRICA

Expanding Footy 9s into South Africa is part of our plan to grow the game in Africa.

Footy 9s is played on rectangular fields, allowing the sport to be played on any soccer or rugby field.

There are 3 great formats to choose from – Men’s Footy, Women’s Footy and Touch Footy.

AUSTRALIA & SOUTH AFRICA
Links between South Africa and Australia date back to the earliest days of European settlement, when food and livestock were supplied from the Cape of Good Hope to the British penal colony in Australia. Australia’s first vine stock also came from South Africa.

According to the 2016 Australian census, 162,449 Australians were born in South Africa. Also in the Census 118,960 residents claimed South African ancestry.

Sydney has the largest number of South African-born residents, followed by Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane.

We have grown from a small group of young Saffa expats kicking the footy together – to a group of roughly 40+ people including partners. We now share more than just the love for sport, but also an appreciation for the great friendships that were formed.

Footy 9s has done a lot for us in this great country we now call home, and we are extremely grateful for that. Team South Africa keeps growing in numbers and we’ll be back next year!

COUNTRY PROFILE
The Republic of South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of Africa, with a 2,798 km coastline on the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. To the north lie Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; while Lesotho is an independent country wholly surrounded by South African territory.

There are only two major rivers: the Limpopo, a stretch of which is shared with Zimbabwe, and the Orange (with its tributary, the Vaal) which runs with a variable flow across the central landscape from east to west, emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at the Namibian border.

Diversity is a key feature of South Africa, where 11 languages are recognised as official.

Very much Africa’s superpower, South Africa has the continent’s biggest economy. Along with China, Brazil, Russia and India, South Africa is a member of the BRICS club of emerging world economic powerhouses.
